Ah, fall golf in the Pacific Northwest: crisp mornings, changing leaves, and perfect sweater weather. Just when you’re ready to squeeze in those last sunny rounds, you step onto the green and… thud. Your putt bounces like it’s rolling over popcorn. That’s right, it’s aerification season.

Why Courses Aerify Each Fall
Aerification, or aeration, is the process where golf courses punch small holes in the greens and remove plugs of turf. While it might look like the aftermath of a determined gopher, it’s essential for keeping the greens healthy.
By relieving soil compaction, improving drainage, and getting oxygen to the roots, aerification helps courses survive the winter and come back strong in the spring. Most courses in the PNW aerify twice a year: once in early spring and again in the fall to keep greens in top shape.
How Long Until the Greens Recover?
Recovery time depends on weather, soil conditions, and how deep the plugs go. Here’s a rough timeline for what to expect:
Playable but Bumpy: 7–10 days after aerification (You can play, but don’t expect silky-smooth rolls yet.)
Fully Healed: Around three weeks (Back to true putts and smooth surfaces.)
If you don’t mind some less-than-perfect greens, this can be a great time to play. Many courses offer discounted rates during and shortly after aerification.

Final Thoughts
There’s never an ideal time for your favorite course to undergo aerification, especially as fall weather starts delivering some of the year’s best golf days. But just like a yearly checkup, aerification is essential for keeping greens healthy and playable in the long run.
Use this guide to plan around the rough patches, check out a new course, or simply adjust expectations for a couple of weeks and enjoy being out on the course.
