Fall 2026 Seattle-Area Aerification Guide: When Your Favorite Seattle-Area Courses are Punching their Greens

Fall golf in the PNW hits different — cooler mornings, that first hint of color on the maples, and just enough crispness in the air to make you actually enjoy walking 18. But right about the time you're settling into peak fall-golf mode, you step up to the green, take your putt... and it dies in a hole three feet short. Welcome back to aerification season.
Why Courses Punch Holes in Perfectly Good Greens
If you're newer to the game (or just never bothered to ask), aerification is the process where greenskeepers pull small plugs of turf and soil out of the greens, leaving behind a field of little holes that look like they were made by a very committed gopher.
It looks rough, but it's one of the most important things a course does all year. Pulling those plugs relieves compaction, opens up the soil so air and water can actually reach the roots, and sets the turf up to survive a soggy PNW winter and bounce back strong come spring. Most local courses aerify twice a year — spring and fall — to keep their greens in game shape.
How Long Before Things Roll True Again?
Recovery time swings based on the weather, soil type, and how deep the plugs were pulled, but here's the general timeline you can expect:
Playable, but bumpy: roughly 7–10 days post-aerification (you can putt, just don't expect it to be pretty)
Fully recovered: around 3 weeks out (back to smooth, predictable rolls)
Here's the silver lining: a lot of courses drop their rates during and just after aerification. If you don't mind some lumpy greens, this is a great window to sneak in a cheap round or try a new course while everyone else is waiting it out.

Final Thoughts
No one loves showing up to their favorite course during aerification week, especially when fall is serving up some of the best golf weather of the year. But think of it like an oil change for the greens — a little short-term annoyance for a course that plays great the other 11 months.
Use this guide to plan around the bumpy stretches, scope out a course you haven't tried yet, or just lower your putting expectations for a couple of weeks and enjoy being outside.
