Fall 2026 Portland-Area Aerification Guide: When Your Favorite Portland-Area Courses Are Punched and Playing Again
Fall in the Willamette Valley means one thing for golfers: gorgeous, mild days perfect for a round... right up until you walk onto a green that looks like it lost a fight with a rototiller. Yep, it's aerification season again for Portland-area courses.
Why Courses Aerate
Aerification is the process where course crews pull small plugs of soil and turf out of the greens, leaving a field of holes that can throw off your putts for a bit. It looks brutal, but it's one of the most important things a course does all year.
Punching those plugs relieves compacted soil, lets air, water, and nutrients reach the roots, and sets the turf up to make it through our soggy Pacific Northwest winters and come back strong in spring. Most Portland-area courses aerify once in the fall (some do a spring round too), typically stretching from late summer into mid-October depending on the course.
How Long Until the Greens Roll True Again?
Recovery time depends on the weather, soil, and how deep the plugs went, but here's the general timeline:
Moderately playable: about 7 days after the aerification window wraps up (you can play, just don't expect a smooth roll)
Back to 100%: roughly 3 weeks out (true putts again)
If a little bumpiness doesn't bother you, this window is often a great time to snag a discounted round or check out a new course while the regulars wait it out.

Moderately playable and back-to-100% estimates are calculated from the last day of each course's aerification window (7 days for moderately playable, 21 days for fully healed). For "week of" entries, we used the full 7-day span and calculated off the last day of that week. Courses marked TBD or weather-dependent don't have a fixed window yet, so no estimate is given. Actual recovery can run faster or slower depending on conditions.
Final Thoughts
Nobody's thrilled to roll up to their home course during aerification week, especially with Portland's fall weather at its finest. But it's the golf-course equivalent of a tune-up — a couple of bumpy weeks now for greens that hold up all winter and come back strong in spring.
