Spring 2026 Aerification Guide: When Your Favorite Portland-Area Courses Are Punched and Playing Smooth Again

Spring golf in the Pacific Northwest hits different - longer days, courses shaking off winter, and that first stretch of dry weather that has everyone dusting off their bags. Just when you're ready to get out there and play your best rounds of the year, you walk onto the green and… thud. Your putt bounces like it's rolling over gravel. Welcome to aerification season.

Why Courses Aerify Each Spring

Aerification, or aeration, is the process where golf courses punch small holes in the greens and remove plugs of turf. While it might look like a determined gopher got loose overnight, it's essential for keeping the greens healthy. By relieving soil compaction, improving drainage, and getting oxygen down to the roots, aerification sets courses up for a strong playing season ahead.

Most courses in the PNW aerify twice a year: once in the spring and again in the fall to keep greens in top shape year-round.

How Long Until the Greens Recover?

Recovery time depends on weather, soil conditions, and how deep the plugs go. Here's a rough timeline for what to expect:

Playable but Bumpy: 7–10 days after aerification (You can play, but don't expect silky-smooth rolls just yet.)

Fully Healed: Around three weeks (Back to true putts and smooth surfaces.)

If you don't mind some less-than-perfect greens, this can actually be a great time to play. Many courses offer discounted rates during and shortly after aerification.

Final Thoughts

There's never a perfect time for your favorite course to undergo aerification, especially when spring is delivering some of the best weather of the year. But just like a yearly checkup, aerification is essential for keeping greens healthy and playable all season long.

Use this guide to plan around the rough patches, explore a course you haven't played yet, or simply adjust your expectations for a couple of weeks and enjoy being out on the course.
